Our students will be employed: Jirayu Vasutheprungsun and the wide range of mechatronics

From Thailand to Finland, Mechatronics student "Ken" Jirayu Vasutheprungsun found not only a practical and hands-on approach to engineering studies at SAMK, but also a chance to pursue his passion for technology, racing culture, and building a future in Finland.

From Thailand to Finland

Ken was first recommended SAMK by a teacher during high school. At that time, he was ready to do things a little differently and began exploring opportunities to study abroad.

– I chose Finland in particular because of its strong reputation for high-quality education.

In addition to academics, Ken also had something quite special on his mind: the speed and excitement of race cars.

– I was also interested in Finland’s car culture and racing scene. I had heard many times about famous Finnish racing drivers, so I decided that Finland would be a good place to try out this new hobby.

Starting the studies

After making this important decision, Ken started his studies at SAMK in 2023. He knew he wanted to pursue a career in engineering but was not yet certain which specific field would suit him best.

– I chose Mechatronics because it offers a wide range of subjects. This way, I can explore different areas and choose my specialty later on.

Put your full effort into this opportunity, not only in your studies but also in extracurricular activities. Attend classes, join sports events, meet new people, and don’t be afraid to try out new activities.

Studying at SAMK is practical

Ken has truly enjoyed his studies at SAMK, especially because of their versatile and hands-on nature.

– I find studying easier than I initially imagined. One reason for this is that most lessons are taught in a practical way rather than through traditional lectures.

Instead of spending long hours sitting in lecture halls, Ken has mainly worked on group assignments and projects, which he finds both motivating and effective.

– I really like this way of learning. Of course, the teachers are always there to offer help and explain the theory when needed.

After several years of hard work studying, Ken has now completed all of his courses.

Building the Future in Mechanical Design

Ken is currently working in a role that matches his field of study. He is now working full-time in Eura at Turasteel Oy. He is working as a Junior mechanical design engineer. Turasteel is a metal manufacturing company that makes excavator buckets and attachments.

– My work is mainly mechanical design work in SolidWorks. I make 3D models based on existing drawings, and I also produce technical drawings from those models (part drawings and assembly drawings) for production.

Just Getting Started

In his free time, he is simply enjoying life in Finland — while, of course, continuing to dream about race cars. He is also looking forward to warm, Finnish summer.

– Hopefully, I can get into racing soon, maybe even this summer!

Workwise and in his everyday life he is pretty confident in trusting that things will go good.

– I don’t really have any concrete plans for the future yet. For now, I’m just going with the flow. I also want to keep learning and of course build my career here now after graduating!

Ken is really interested in race cars. In the future he hopes to get to know more about racing.

SAMK at SuomiAreena, in themes of space technology, expertise and a sustainable future

SAMK will participate in SuomiAreena in Pori from 23 to 26 June 2026. SAMK will be contributing both the Kansalaistori (Citizen square) programme and SuomiAreena’s Suuri avaruuspäivä (Big Space Day) which will explore the opportunities offered by space technology and Finland’s role as a future success story.

The graduating student’s speech was given by Viivi Virtanen, who graduated from the Degree Programme for Entrepreneurs (Yrittäjän tutkinto-ohjelma).
