Our students will be employed: Jichen Lu’s Journey from Tourism Studies to Marketing

When Jichen Lu watched Frozen 2, she never imagined it would inspire her to choose Finland. What began as a fascination with snowflakes, Santa Claus and the Northern Lights soon became a life-changing decision, leading her to SAMK, a degree in International Tourism Management and a career in marketing.

From Beijing to the west coast of Finland

Originally from Beijing, China, Jichen moved to Finland five years ago to pursue her international education. Choosing SAMK meant more than just studies – it was about broadening horizons.

– This has given me the opportunity to deepen my professional knowledge and integrate what I have learned. In addition, SAMK provides international students with many practical opportunities, encouraging us to take on internships and grow through real-world experience.

Jichen especially valued being a student ambassador, supporting new students and sharing her own story at various events.

Growing through experience

One of her most memorable moments was her three-month internship at SAMK EduTravel.

– I began with anxiety but eventually became comfortable with the work. This experience has been beneficial to me even after graduation, as it allowed me to adapt to the work environment in Finland in advance.

Jichen’s experiences helped her discover her real passion: marketing.

From thesis to a full-time career

Today, Jichen works as a Marketing Specialist at Qoco. She originally applied for an internship through LinkedIn while writing her thesis – six months later, she signed her first full-time contract.

Her thesis, Market research on exporting Finnish sports education to the Chinese market (CASE: KISAKALLIO), allowed her to connect her interest in marketing with her international background.

In her current role, she works closely with her manager to oversee marketing activities ranging from digital campaigns and exhibitions to paid advertising, design, and copywriting.

Based on her current work experience, Jichen believes that it is important to try using tools that will be useful in future work during your studies.

– First, identify the tools you will frequently use in your future work and focus on practicing them. Additionally, don’t be afraid of coffee chats—this is also a soft skill. Be brave enough to share your experiences with others and seek their advice; you might unexpectedly gain new opportunities in the process.

Advice for future students

Jichen believes graduates from International Tourism Management have wide career opportunities. Some people work in sales and marketing at start-up companies, some work in government departments, some work in hotels and restaurants, and some start their own businesses.

– But what I want to say is, as my teacher Heini told me back then, don’t limit yourself. During my studies, I discovered that I was very interested in marketing, so I focused on studying this field, and my thesis was also on marketing. I received support and encouragement from different teachers.

She warmly recommends SAMK to anyone looking for an international education in Finland.

You will find your own enjoyment here. With its beautiful natural environment, comfortable campus, and peaceful urban atmosphere, you will be captivated by this city.

Recommendation and gratitude

Looking back, Jichen describes her years at SAMK as wonderful and unforgettable.

– I learned a lot here, made friends from all over the world, and received help from my teachers. Especially Heini, who always showed care and encouragement and offered me many opportunities, from when I was taking online classes in China until I graduated. I am very happy that we are still in touch today.
