Our students will be employed: A brave step from Bangladesh to Finland

When Taslima Akter moved from Bangladesh to Finland to study International Tourism Management at SAMK, she was determined to build a better future. Through hands-on projects, international experiences, and strong student support, she turned her dream into a professional career.

For 22-year-old Taslima Akter, moving from Bangladesh to Finland was a big step, but it also marked the beginning of a meaningful and life-changing journey. She arrived in Finland with a clear dream: to study abroad and build a better future for herself.

Finland stood out because of its strong education system, safe environment, and supportive learning culture.

– After researching different universities, I decided to study at SAMK. I felt that SAMK would not only provide good education but also offer strong practical learning environment.

Learning by doing in an international environment

At SAMK, Taslima studied International Tourism Management. She chose this field because she enjoys working with people, learning about different cultures, and being part of the dynamic tourism and hospitality industry.

Studying in a new country came with challenges, but it was also exciting and rewarding. Taslima especially appreciated the practical learning approach, group work, and open communication in class.

– The teachers were friendly, approachable, and always ready to help. I felt comfortable asking questions and valued the supportive atmosphere within my department.

During her studies, Taslima actively participated in various opportunities. One of the highlights was attending a summer school in Latvia — an experience she describes as one of the best of her life. It gave her the chance to meet students from different countries, study in a new environment, and grow both personally and academically.

Another meaningful experience was the Tour4Youth project. It is a free programme designed to support young people in building careers in the tourism, hospitality, and restaurant sectors. The project is trying to smoothen transition from education to employment, creates access to job opportunities and helps young people gain both employment and valuable work experience.

– Through this hands-on project, I gained practical knowledge, worked in a real project environment, and strengthened my teamwork and communication skills. The experience was so impactful that I was even offered an internship as a result.

A strong support system

One of the things Taslima values most about SAMK is its well-organised support system. The university offers guidance through tutors, student ambassadors, mentors, and the international office, ensuring that new students receive the help they need. There are also student counsellors and special needs teacher helping whenever needed.

– When I arrived in Finland as a newcomer, I also received a lot of support, which helped me feel welcome and confident.

Inspired by her positive experience, she later worked as a student ambassador and mentor herself. Supporting new students, sharing her journey, and helping others take their first steps in Finland felt especially meaningful.

– It was my way of giving back the support I once received.

From studies to professional growth

After graduation, Taslima continued developing her skills and building her career. She is currently working at Scandic Hotels, where she applies the knowledge and skills gained during her studies. The role has given her valuable real-life experience in hospitality and further strengthened her customer service expertise.

– Looking ahead, I hope to continue build my career in the tourism and hospitality industry. I want to keep learning, improving my skills, and growing both professionally and personally.

I hope my story can inspire other international students to believe in their dreams!

Taslima’s Advice for Future Students

For students planning to come to Finland, her advice is simple:

  • Be patient, stay open-minded, and never hesitate to ask for help.
  • Try to learn basic Finnish, respect the culture, and make new friends.
  • Most importantly — believe in yourself and never give up!
