Moving to an unfamiliar country and starting a new life can be grueling, but the process becomes easier if there is a community that shares knowledge and supports each other. This was the idea that started it all, an association that uplifts each individual and strengthens the Sri Lankan community here in Pori.
The Sri Lankan Association in Pori (SLAP), founded in 2024 by aspiring SAMK alumni, has supported many newcomers from Sri Lanka to integrate into the life in Pori and preserve the culture within the group. By building a harmonious community, the association naturally became the charismatic representatives of Sri Lankan culture in the city.
The goal is empowering the community
SLAP reinforces the community by supporting each of its members in life in Pori. It provides services or simply advises about employment, education, settlement and personal development so that they have the confidence to build their own lives in Finland. It also plays the role of a networking hub for members to connect and share information.
The association is the home away from home for Sri Lankans living in Pori. SLAP proudly maintains the vibrant heritage within the group through cultural activities. The purpose is, as mentioned by the chairman, Tharindu Nuwan, to give Sri Lankans a space to stay connected with their roots and traditions. The gatherings and meet-ups give the members opportunities to meet and befriend people with the same heritage.
SLAP does not just bring the Sri Lankan community closer together, it builds a bridge between them and the local Pori community. One of the notable events of the association was the Kids Carnival, an open occasion that welcomed over 200 children of all backgrounds:
– It was wonderful to see children of different nationalities playing together and enjoying the activities.
The event successfully brought together the citizens of Pori and tightened the bonds across cultures.

A beautiful cultural exchange
SLAP has held many events to celebrate Sri Lanka’s rich culture. The chairman proudly talked about Porin Vesak-Juhla 2026, an important Buddhist celebration that captured the public’s interest in Pori.
Over a thousand people from Pori and surrounding areas came and joined the event. The celebration included traditional performances, activities and Sri Lankan food were served for the participants free of charge. This was an occasion where culture and heritage were shared while uniting the wider community.
Sharing culture in harmony with the local way of life
Even though the association has held many meaningful events, both within the community and for the public, it firmly believes sharing culture is about integration and harmony with the local way of life, said Tharindu:
– We live in Finland and respect Finnish society, its culture and way of life. Our responsibility is to integrate, adapt, and contribute positively to the society we live in.
The association encourages its members to live in social cohesion with their new community, follow local customs and welcome Finnish culture into their daily lives.
SLAP membership is open for people of Sri Lankan origin, and everyone is welcome to their public events.
