Our students will be employed: Yuan’s Journey in Robotics Engineering

Yang Yuanyuan had always been fascinated by engineering. Her move from China to Finland not only fulfilled her educational dreams but opened the door to real-world robotics career opportunities.

The Mechatronics degree programme at SAMK combines mechanical, electrical and automation engineering, equipping students with versatile technical skills to solve real-world industrial challenges in robotics and smart systems.

Choosing Finland for new opportunities

When Yang Yuanyuan, known to her friends as Yuan, first moved from China to Finland three years ago, she was drawn by Finland’s reputation as the happiest country in the world. Seeking a balanced educational experience and new opportunities, Yuan found her ideal match at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences.

Discovering Mechatronics at SAMK

Yuan enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics programme.

– I’ve always been interested in technology and engineering, and mechatronics offered a combination of different engineering fields, allowing me to explore my interests before specialising.

The Mechatronics programme covers a wide range of fields where mechanical and electrical engineering meet, with topics like automation and control engineering included. Yuan found the automation and robotics modules particularly captivating, shaping her professional path significantly.

A standout experience during Yuan’s studies was the practical, project-based learning approach.

– Through these projects — and with the support of our helpful teachers — I really started to understand how the industry works. That experience helped me discover my true passion, and it played a big part in my personal and professional growth over the past three years.

From classroom to robotics engineer

Yuan smoothly transitioned from student to professional during her second year when she was offered a role as a Robotics Engineer at Lapela in Rauma. She was approached by a company representative during a school-organised event.

It was a great example of how school projects and the real-world industry can connect.

At her workplace, Yuan got to take on a wide variety of tasks – from offline robot programming and mechanical design to technical support and customer support.

Engineering skills that matter

Reflecting on her education, Yuan values how directly applicable her SAMK studies have been.

– Learning offline programming and automation systems helped me directly. Also, understanding the basics of both mechanical engineering and different programming languages gave me a solid foundation to work independently on various tasks at the company.

Currently, Yuan is excitedly starting the work on her thesis, exploring the combination of artificial intelligence and robotics, aligning perfectly with her educational background, professional experience, and field of interests.

A world of opportunities after graduation

Graduates from the Mechatronics programme have diverse career options, including roles as electricians, maintenance technicians, automation engineers, mechanical engineers, etc. Some continue their academic path by pursuing master’s degrees in many various fields, such as aerospace engineering.

– It’s a very flexible degree with many opportunities.

Recommendation and gratitude

Yuan confidently recommends SAMK, praising the dedicated support she received from her teachers.

SAMK has been a great place for me, not just in terms of learning but also in terms of personal development. The teachers here are incredibly supportive, patient, and truly care about students’ growth.

She extends heartfelt thanks to all teachers at SAMK who supported her throughout these three years, and particularly to our lecturers – Timo Kerminen and Petteri Pulkkinen.

– Special thanks to Timo Kerminen, a person who has been in the industry for so many years. He taught us not only from textbooks but also in real life, and he always tries to bring real industry projects into the classroom. And when I had problems at work, he was always there to help. Also, to Petteri Pulkkinen — he always took the time to answer our even smallest questions and guide us patiently. I’m truly grateful for everything.
