Open Studies suit anyone interested in developing their professional abilities regardless of age and educational background. With Open Studies you can follow a range of course run by the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences.

Studying in Open UAS
Most of the courses open for Open UAS students are the same courses the degree students take. In other words you study together with them. Some courses are arranged separately. In these cases the student group consists of Open UAS students only.
Performances can include exams, assignments, essays, reports and projects. More detailed information of performances is available in course descriptions. Partly web-based or online courses are also available.
One credit equals 27 hours of the student’s work. It can include e.g. contact classes, distant studies and assignments.
Enrolling for the courses
You have to enrol for the courses of Open UAS at the latest two weeks before the beginning of the course through the Meerkado service (choose the right course and enrol for it). Students are accepted to the course in order of enrollment. If you cannot find a suitable course from Meerkado, you can leave your contact information by filling in the general form of open UAS.
You pay the tuition fee when you enrol for the course in Meerkado.
NB! Degree students do not enrol by using the enrollment form of open UAS, but as usual on Loki.

Tuition fees for Open University of Applied Sciences Studies
Open university of applied sciences study fees include a credit-based fee and a term fee.
A credit-based fee (10 €/credit) entitles you to conduct only a predefined number of credits during a limited right to study (individual courses, higher education diplomas and other study modules).
With a term fee (100 €/term) you can study an unlimited number of open UAS courses during the term. A term fee entitles you to study either during spring-summer term or autumn term (Tuition starting between 1 January – 31 July/tuition starting between 1 August – 31 December). The term fee is intended for path students and those who take several individual courses during the term. One-year long Path Studies´ tuition fee is 200 € (incl. two term fees of 100 € each).

In celebration of SAMK's 30th anniversary, alumni can study free of charge at SAMK's Open University of Applied Sciences until the end of the year 2022 (code AV100). NOTE! The free study applies to single courses in the Open University of Applied Sciences.
If you are entitled to free studies and you enrol for a course through Meerkado, please remember to do following things:
- You should include group’s code AV100 in your enrolment.
- In addition, you should use the email address of your institution when enrolling.
- You may need to provide proof for your entitlement for free studies.
CANCELLATION TERMS
Individual courses:
– In case of hindrance, the student place must be cancelled not later than 14 days before the beginning of the course by sending email to the address: avoinamk@samk.fi. Otherwise, full course fee will be charged. N.B.! The enrolment for nonstop courses is binding, so there is no right of withdrawal.
Path studies and other study modules:
– Cancellation terms are determined by the study modules, and there is information about them in the education brochure and/or the letter of invitation sent to the student. As a rule in path studies and other study modules, the students confirm their student places by email. A confirmed student place is an obligation to pay the fee.
Cancellations must always be made in writing by sending email to: avoinamk@samk.fi. Not starting the studies is not regarded as cancellation. If a student drops off the course he/she has already started, a full fee is charged. A fee is returned in full only if the studies are cancelled because of reasons arising from SAMK.
What are Open University of Applied Sciences Path Studies?
- In path studies you will mainly study with the degree group the studies belonging to the first/second year curriculum of Bachelor´s/Master´s studies.
- Path studies are arranged as daytime and multiform studies and they can include contact teaching, distant learnings tasks and online teaching.
- With path studies you can lighten your future study load as a degree student in advance and speed up your studies.
- After completing the path studies, you can apply through separate application system for a degree student, and continue your studies with the same familiar group.
- Studies completed as path studies can be included in the degree according to degree requirements in force at the given time. Inclusions are made only for a degree student.
- B. If you are obliged to pay a term fee for your UAS studies, you cannot be chosen for open UAS studies. More information on term fees here. Open Path studies are not regarded as studies leading to a degree, so residence permit for studies in Finland is not granted based on an Open Path study place.
Studying the path studies
In the open UAS path studies you mainly study with the degree student group the Bachelor´s and Master´s degree studies according to the curricula. Path studies are arranged as daytime and multiform studies and they can include contact teaching, distant learnings tasks and online teaching. Path students will have their own PSP (Personal Study Plan) discussion with their teacher tutor, where the progress of studies is planned.
Path Studies are available in the Faculties of Health and Welfare, Logistics and Maritime Management, Technology and Business Administration.
When are the applications to path studies organized?
So-called path study application periods are usually organized twice a year, after the higher education spring and autumn joint application periods.

The price of path studies
The price of path studies is determined by the valid open UAS payment policy of SAMK. One-year long path studies´ tuition fee is 200 € (incl. two term fees of 100 € each). The tuition fee of open UAS path studies is charged once the studies have started.
Financing of path studies
Open UAS studies are not studies leading to a degree. As a result, an open UAS student is not entitled to student financial aid, student discounts or other social benefits intended for degree students.
If you are unemployed, please contact Employment Office well in advance before the start of the studies and find out the possibilities for benefits during your studies.

Selection criteria for path studies
Students are primarily selected for path studies in the order of enrollment. In some application options, the selection criterion is passing the selection course, followed by the order of enrollment. In the health care and social services´ multiform implementation path studies, the basic educational requirements include a social services, healthcare or educational vocational upper secondary qualification, diploma or academic degree. Enrolling for Master´s degree path studies requires a check that the applicant has an applicable academic degree, vocational higher education degree or post-secondary level diploma.
Informing about selection, i.e. path study letter
When applying for path studies, please remember that the enrollment is binding. We will send email to those selected for path studies as soon as possible after the application period has ended. The ones on the waiting list will also be informed by email. The path study letter includes information about the starting date of the studies, the teacher tutor of the group and other practicalities. The path study student place must be confirmed by answering the path study letter. Cancellation of path study student place must also be informed by the due date given in the letter. If participation in path studies is cancelled after the deadline, we will charge 50% of the open UAS term fee.
N.B. Please remember to follow the email you have given in the path study application form.
Separate Application System: Open Path to Degree Studies
The application period to Open Path degree studies in SAMK is 1 – 15 May and 1 – 15 November. The required Open UAS studies must have been completed by the end of May when applying in spring and by the end of November when applying in autumn. Separate application is submitted online during the application period at www.studyinfo.fi.
In open path separate application the applicant does not need to pass the entrance exam or interview or give any other specific proof to be selected. Student admission is based only on the completion of open UAS studies.
Education leading to Bachelor´s degree:
Those who have completed Finnish Open UAS studies can apply to Satakunta University of Applied Sciences based on these studies. In order to be eligible the applicant must have completed at least 45 ECTS credits of Open UAS studies, which can be recognized as a part of the degree programme for which he/she is applying. The applicant does not need the previously required school education to be eligible for Bachelor´s degree studies (Polytechnic Law 25 §). Maximum 15 ECTS credits completed in another higher education institution and included in the studies leading to Bachelor´s degree will be taken into account in the selection.
Education leading to Master´s degree:
The applicant must have completed at least 30 ECTS credits of Open UAS studies, which can be recognized as a part of the Master´s degree programme for which he/she is applying. Besides open Open UAS studies the applicant must have a Bachelor´s degree or higher level degree or polytechnic degree (in Finnish: ammatillisen korkea-asteen tutkinto tai opistoasteen tutkinto) and two years of work experience in the relevant field of the Bachelor´s degree or higher level degree or polytechnic degree (in Finnish: ammatillisen korkea-asteen tutkinto tai opistoasteen tutkinto) or the field applied for in order to be eligible (Polytechnic Law 25§).” Maximum 15 ECTS credits completed in another higher education institution and included in the studies leading to Master´s degree will be taken into account in the selection.

When you complete studies, you will get a transcript of studies, which will be sent to you as requested after the grade of the course has been recorded.
The transcript of studies includes the name, extent and completion day of the course. Upon request, you can also get a separate certificate of the completed courses.
