Monthly image: Identity by Ottilia Roos

– I am interested in graphic arts because of their technicality and versatility. The boundless opportunities of the art form keep on amazing me. I don’t mind feeling like a little scientist when playing with the different techniques of graphic arts. At the moment I am enjoying picturing topics related to medicine, writes Ottilia Roos, who graduated as a visual artist from SAMK in June 2019.

The method of art I prefer the most is intaglio printing. The possibilities of producing graphic arts outside classroom are, however, limited, so I find myself working also on painting and ceramics. Graphic arts interest me most because of their technicality and versatility. The boundless opportunities of the art form keep on amazing me. I don’t mind feeling like a little scientist when playing with the different techniques of graphic arts.

The boundless opportunities of the art form keep on amazing me.

The ideas for my works of art can sprout from wherever, but mainly I picture things that I myself consider aesthetic or interesting. At the moment I am enjoying picturing topics related to medicine. Dusty libraries and second-hand bookshops inspire me. Traditional topics, such as nature and everyday life, also recur in my works of art.

My journey as a visual artist is just beginning, so I am going to dedicate my time in polishing my skills, so that the topics or styles of my works of art would not be limited by my abilities. I wish to to be able to realize my all, even the craziest ideas without hearing the little sound in my head saying: you can’t do it or you don’t know how to do it. I want to be able to know how!

Even though the career of a visual artist often also involves working as a teacher or a instructor, “the necessary evil” some may say, I have felt a real calling for teaching for a long time. Teaching helps me to develop myself and keep up my skills of a visual artist. However, the best thing about teaching is that your students trust your ability to help them. As a person who has been struggling with insecurity for a long time, it feels amazingly good to be able to help with something when asked for advice.

The work of art is part of the series in three parts, with the other parts being:
Spirit: size 49 x 37,5 cm, technique: etching, photoetching, aquatint, sugar aquatint, 49×37,5 cm, 2019
Life: size 49 x 37,5 cm, technique etching, photoetching, aquatint, sugar aquatint, 49×37,5 cm, 2019

Ottilia Roos was born in Tammela 1993 and graduated from the degree prorgramme in Fine Arts with a Bachelor’s degree in Culture and Arts from SAMK Kankaanpää in June 2019. She lives in Tampere.
