The aim of the agreement is to provide the staff of the university of applied sciences, students pursuing a Master’s degree in the university of applied sciences (YAMK), and business partners with an opportunity to complete a doctoral degree under the guidance and with the support of Åbo Akademi University. The programme aims to admit five new doctoral candidates per year, with dissertations to be written in either English or Swedish.

The collaboration seeks to foster new doctoral degrees that are closely aligned with professional practice and support the needs of working life. The agreement contributes to the development of applied research at SAMK and strengthens the academic expertise of both the higher education institution and business professionals.

The agreement opens new doors for the advancement of applied research

Doctoral candidates will receive guidance from at least two supervisors – one from Åbo Akademi University and the other from SAMK staff. The principal supervisor will always be from Åbo Akademi University. The objective is for candidates to complete their doctoral degree in three to four years.

– This agreement opens new doors for the advancement of applied research and provides SAMK staff and partners with a valuable opportunity to deepen their academic expertise. The collaboration strongly supports regional business life and the development of research competence, states Cimmo Nurmi, Vice President for Research, SAMK.
