Enrolment for the academic year

Enrolment instructions for new and continuing student

According to the Finnish legislation every student must enroll for the next academic year as present or absent.

Enrollment instructions

Please read the enrollment instructions below carefully to confirm your study place and to ensure the continuation of your study right.

Academic calendar

The academic year consists of three semesters:

  • Autumn semester (1 August – 31 December)
  • Spring semester (1 January – 31 May)
  • Summer semester (1 June – 31 July)

In Finland, the academic year begins in the autumn semester. Teaching is provided during the autumn and spring semesters. When students enroll for the spring semester, their enrollment automatically covers the following summer semester, and no separate tuition fee is charged for the summer period. However, this also means that no teaching is provided during the summer semester. Students who have enrolled as present in the spring semester may study independently during the summer; however, as no teaching is available then, any submissions made during the summer will be evaluated in the following semester, provided the student has enrolled as present for that semester.

If you wish to graduate by the end of a certain semester, please ensure that all your coursework, thesis, and related assignments are submitted by the deadlines set by your teachers. Please note that there are holiday periods of varying lengths at the end of each semester, and if you submit your coursework after the holiday period has begun, graduation during that semester will no longer be possible. If needed, please verify with your teacher the latest date by which you must submit your work to ensure it can be evaluated before the holiday periods begin. If your studies extend into the next semester for any reason, you must enroll as present and pay the tuition fee for that semester, regardless of the amount of work or studies remaining. Tuition fees are collected on a semester basis and cannot be reduced or adjusted depending.
