Tuition fees and scholarships

Remember to pay the tuition fee and apply for scholarships

Students enrolled to SAMK who are nationals of non-EU and non-EEA countries, are due to pay the annual tuition fee. There is a scholarship programme available for the students who pay the tuition fee.

Students outside the EU/EEA area and Switzerland are required to pay a tuition fee for each academic year. The fees vary depending on the chosen programme:

  • Artificial Intelligence (Data Engineering), Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics cost 10,500 euros per academic year.
  • All the rest of the programmes cost 9,500 euros per academic year.

These fees apply to both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes taught in English.

The Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences Act was amended at the end of 2024. The new law entered into force on 1 December 2024, changing the types of residence permits that allows tuition fee exemptions. The new law affects both new students as well as those currently studying at SAMK. Possible exemption of tuition fees depends on your current residence permit type and your residence permit history in Finland.

Exemption from the tuition fee is given in the following cases:

  • you are a citizen of an European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) member state or Switzerland
  • you have an EU Family Member’s Residence Card in Finland
    • you must hold the permit yourself, i.e. being a family member of a person who has a residence permit in an EU country does not grant you a tuition fee exemption
  • you have an EU Blue Card granted in Finland
  • you have a permanent residence permit card in Finland (Type P permit) or you have a residence card in Finland for a family member of residence permit P holder in Finland
  • you have a residence permit card in Finland on the basis of temporary protection, as referred to in the Aliens Act
    • the permit must be valid at the beginning of the study right, and remain valid during the studies. If the permit is subsequently revoked based on the said Act’s section 58, subsection 4, the exemption ceases.
  • you have an EU residence permit for third-country citizens with long-term residence permit card in Finland (Type P-EU permit)
  • you have a Brexit residence permit card in Finland, on the basis of SEU-sopimuksen 50 artikla = Right of residence under the withdrawal agreement, or P SEU-sopimuksen 50 artikla = Right of permanent residence under the withdrawal agreement
  • a continuous residence permit (Type A permit) in Finland for purposes other than studies may exempt you from paying the tuition fee, see more information below.

Non-EU/EEA/Switzerland citizens who have a continuous residence permit (Type A) are required to pay tuition fees in the following cases:

  • you currently have a continuous residence permit card in Finland (Type A permit) granted for studying in Finland
    • from 15 April 2022 onwards type A residence permit for studies does not exempt student from paying tuition fee.
  • your first residence permit in Finland was granted for the purpose of studying, even if you later have obtained a continuous residence permit Type A on other grounds.
  • you have a continuous residence permit (Type A permit) based on family ties in Finland, and your family member (sponsor) originally came to Finland on a residence permit granted for studying
  • you have a continuous residence permit (Type A permit) based on family ties and your family member (sponsor) currently holds a residence permit granted for studying.
