More than 10,000 exams taken in EXAM examination studios

– The ten thousandth exam was taken in SAMK EXAM examination studio in mid-June, Katja Lempinen reveals. The exam is taken by a computer at a previously agreed upon time. There´s no need for a teacher to supervise the exam, and the student can take the exam at any campus.

– Next autumn there will be a possibility for “exam visit”. Students can take exams at other higher education institutions and their examination studios, Katja Lempinen tells us.

SAMK EXAM examination studio has been in use since autumn 2016. Examination studio operations started in Rauma, and in Pori the examination studio was introduced in the new facilities in autumn 2017. Of the exams 7,500 have been taken in Pori. Now there are examination studios also in the campuses of Kankaanpää and Huittinen.

Resits in the examination studio

Students from all fields can take exams in examination studios. Common resit days were abandoned in autumn 2018 – now resits are taken in the examination studio. A certain exam can be taken at a certain time.

EXAM examination studio is used in 27 higher education institutions. According to the survey conducted by Exam consortium, the users feel that examination studio makes taking exams more flexible. Exam dates can be adjusted according to student´s own timetable and studying schedule during the exam period defined by the teacher.

– Some feel a bit stressed because of the examination studio, some feel it is a more peaceful environment, tells Katja Lempinen, Coordinator for Online Education, who is also responsible for EXAM examination studios at SAMK.

Examination studios have headphones and pen displays, which enable making special characters of mathematics, physics and chemistry as well as Russian, which has been tested already.

The system allots the computer to be used in the exam at the campus chosen by the student. SAMK students can take the exam at any campus. There are 25 computers for this at SAMK.

Exam visit on the way

– This autumn there will an opportunity for exam visits. Students from different higher education institutions can take exams at other institutions´ examination studios.

27 higher education institutions are involved in EXAM, and many will participate in exam visit procedure. Each higher education institution will decide how many computers they will have available for visitors.

According to Lempinen, EXAM is relatively easy to use both for teachers and students, and support team will give advice for both if necessary.

– Last summer we were closed for six weeks but in future taking exams in EXAM examination studios might be possible during the summer as well.

EXAM is a Finnish system started initially by 10 higher education institutions. EXAM is still developed in cooperation.

SAMK's Winter School brings culture and insights to Taiwanese senior high school students

For two weeks, SAMK has been hosting visitors from Taiwan. The group consists of about thirty students from two senior high schools, New Taipei Municipal Jhangshu International Creative Technical High School and Living Word Lutheran High School. The students are accompanied by one teacher and two principals.
