Topic of the thesis

The topic of the thesis shall be connected with the field of the degree programme. The topic is often an everyday problem requiring a solution. For choosing the topic and conducting the work, it is essential that you are able to ask good questions.

Think about your objectives. What do you want to learn? Choose a current, justifiable and interesting topic. The fact that you are interested in the topic and the outcome makes your work easier. Do not pick a topic to which you have an aversion. This advice is apparently obvious, yet important.

It is also worth considering what kind of topic would improve your employment opportunities – the thesis can act as a bridge to working life or to new tasks in working life.

Do not throw yourself into the topic headlong; instead, deepen your knowledge and acquire a comprehensive general idea of the possible focus of research or development. To what extent has the matter been studied before? Could you dig deeper into it? What larger problem or context is it related to? What kind of literature is available on this topic? Who would be your thesis supervisor? Where would you obtain other support you need? Would the solution benefit others? (Hakala 2004, 39.)
