Master Degree Courses for Incoming Exchange Students

We are happy to welcome master level students from our partner universities to spend a study abroad period in Rauma.

SAMK offers currently one Master's Degree Programme totally in English, International Business Management and Entrepreneurship, BME.

In BME, studying is strongly based on working life. R&D projects and assignments characterize the learning
process. E-Learning is used about 80 per cent of the time. Contact sessions are primarily twice a month in Rauma.

AUTUMN TERM 2010

YBU0303 Strategic Marketing Management,  6 cr

Learning outcomes:
the student’s strategic thinking involves all strategic and organisational levels.
He/she sees strategy work as a continuous process, which guides the marketing operations and
activities of a firm. The competitive edge is actively sought; opportunities for sustainable growth
are recognised and turned into marketing plans. The student knows how to put appropriate
marketing strategies into practice.

Contents:
knowledge management; information retrieval, future research, scenarios, changes in
working life as challenges to learning; information networks in sharing and establishing expertise;
use of the e-learning environment(s).

YBU080305 International Marketing Communication, 6 cr

Learning outcomes: the student understands the complexity of international marketing
communication and the influence of culture on the behaviour of customers. The student is able to
analyse and develop international marketing communication strategies.

Contents: the elements of international marketing communication, especially brand
communication; integrated marketing communication; building an international brand
communication strategy.

YBU080302 International Entrepreneurship and New Venture Management,  6 cr

Learning outcomes: the student is familiar with the incentives in and barriers to international
business. He/she knows the policies and programmes for the enhancement of international
entrepreneurship provided by the European Union. The student is able to make an effective
business plan for and a realistic risk evaluation of starting up a new international business
activity/an SME.

Contents: role of SMEs in European and global economies; special features of SMEs in Europe;
special features of entrepreneurship in other business cultures; sources of competitive advantage;
life cycle of small business development; developing an effective business plan for a new venture;
possibility to cooperate with the Business Accelerator of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences
as well as with the international partner universities of SAMK.

VY00007 Comparative European Business 3 cr
VY00008 Comparative European Business 6 cr

Learning outcomes:
The student comprehends the European Single Market opportunities and
is able to use the instruments available for the benefit of his/her own business sector, albeit national, international or global by nature. (S)he recognizes the challenges of globalisation
from the European point of view in the light of commercial and economic interaction. An optional
real-life project has deepened the student’s understanding of the special features of doing
business in Europe.

Contents:
European business in a global context; The integration imperative and market integration; Competition and industrial policies, SME development, EMU; Labor markets, energy
and transportation issues, environmental and consumer issues; Europe and emerging economies.

Note: A study trip and/or an R&D project implemented with an international partner increases the credits from 3 to 6.

VY00012 Academic Writing,  3 cr

Learning outcomes:
The student is familiar with theoretical basis for sriting advanced academic papers and he/she learns to practice and develop these skills.

Contents:
Theoretical fundamentals of academic sriting, monitoring student papers for the main study units, personal and group consulatation.

Additionally

Additionally, there will be courses on Knowledge Management, Future Studies, Organizational Development Methods and international Business Environment. 
Exchange students can also join the Master's thesis group. Please discuss these alternatives with the degree programme co-ordinator Anne Vihakara.

SPRING TERM 2011

YBU080301 Innovation and Change, 6 cr

Learning outcomes: the student comprehends the necessity for innovation in order to
achieve/maintain a competitive edge and knows the various types of innovation. He/she is familiar
with the framework in which innovation takes place and knows how to facilitate innovation in
his/her organisation. The student understands the individual and organisational factors related to
any change process. He/she has adopted modern managerial thinking as well as the tools to
successfully plan, promote, carry out and evaluate change in his/her own field/work organisation.

Contents: Economics of Innovation, sources of innovation and opportunity; innovation policy in
the EU, innovation and competitiveness policy in Finland; innovation management; limitations and
obstacles to change; best practices in change management, performance indicators of change.

YBU080304 International Project Management,  6 cr

Learning outcomes: the student is able to manage international projects using virtual project
management tools and methods. He/she has become a more experienced team leader of a multicultural team in an international setting.

Contents: best practices of international project management; implementation of a business project
in cooperation with an international partner institution and/or companies abroad. Linked to
YMB080303: the content of the case project is derived from there.


YBU080203 Developing Human Resourses and Organisations, 3 cr

Learning outcomes: the student can choose appropriate organisational and human resources
development (HRD) tools and methods in a given situation. He/she is able to evaluate the impact
of development processes on the individual, team and organisational levels. The complexity of
organisation development in the work of a leader/manager is well understood.

Contents: intangible assets of a company; assessment of IA; competence development; Human
Resources Development, Organisational Development Methods such as organisational
interventions and benchmarking; Investigating Corporate Climate and Culture; Compiling,
analysing and interpreting material for qualitative research; action research and case study. Linked
to YBU080201 and YBU080202. Implemented in co-operation with the Pori UC.

VY00014 Entering the Emerging Markets 3 cr
VY00015 Entering the Emerging Markets 6 cr

Learning outcomes:
The student is familiar with the diversity of the business environments in Russia and Central-Asia, South and East Asia, Africa and South America. He/she understands the role of these regions in the world trade. The student also comprehends the basic guidelines of doing business in these countries as well as the market potential and challenges.

Contents: Socio-demographic features; economic figures in comparison; cultural diversity; politics and business; sources of information. Market access plan.

Note: A study trip and/or an R&D project implemented with an international partner increases credits from 3 to 6. Focus in spring 2011 is on China and India. The trip is planned to either of these regions but final decision is made with the group.
