Entrance Exam Pre-Reading Material

The Degree Programme in International Business and Marketing Logistics (IBML) in SAMK will arrange the entrance exam in April 2013. All applicants who have demonstrated their eligibility and language skills will be invited to the entrance examinations.

The entrance exam consists of a written part (an essay, multiple choice questions, tasks of applied mathematics and logic) and a group discussion. The exam essay and multiple choice questions will be based on pre-reading material that the applicants must study before coming to the entrance exam.

Pre-reading material for the entrance examination

The pre-reading material for the International Business Entrance Exam 2013 is the PDF file " Fiskars Annual Report 2011".

Reading instructions for Fiskars Annual Report 2011: The entrance exam essay and multiple-choice questions will be based on the Fiskars Annual Report 2011 pages 1 to 47 (the chapter on “Remuneration” ending on page 47 is the last page to study for the exam).

The material is available at this website until 24 April 2013. Applicants must study the material carefully before the entrance exam. It is not allowed to take the material to the actual exam, and the material is not available during the exam.

The ability to communicate fluently in speaking and writing in English is a prerequisite for admission. Therefore, applicants must pass all the parts of the examination in order to be selected for admission. Applicants scoring below the minimum points for any of the sections will fail the exam.

The entrance exam points chart:

Examination part

Minimum points
Apply for the Master's programme in business

SAMK provides tools to reach the top in the business world

Application procedure for the English-language Master’s programme in business administration starts now

The Faculty of Business and Culture in Rauma offers an interesting English-language Master’s degree at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. The degree programme in Business Management and Entrepreneurship (BME) develops the students’ competence in the changing domestic and international business environments.

BME, which leads to the degree Master of Business Administration, educates students for strategic management and business development in small and medium-sized enterprises, focusing particularly on their international operations. There is a great demand for strategic thinking, new business concepts, networking and management skills in the global operational environment. Cooperation with partner institutions adds to the international nature of the programme.

Master's studies take 2,5 years to complete as part-time multiform studies together with a normal day job, if necessary. There are about four contact sessions per year. Each contact session takes 2-3 days. Exercises based on working life and RDI projects characterize the learning process. The degree programme, of which 90 per cent consists of online studies, can easily be completed in addition to a regular job in Finland or abroad. Several partner universities add to the international focus of the studies. The thesis, with which the student can develop the activities at his or her workplace, is a major part of the degree studies.

All those who have completed business studies worth at least 40 ECTS credits at a higher education institution are eligible to apply. Furthermore, the applicants are required to have a Bachelor’s degree, as well as work experience of at least three years in the relevant field. The language of instruction is English; hence, applications from both Finns and non-Finns are welcome. The students currently pursuing studies in the BME programme come from Finland, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Morocco and India.

Applications for the degree programme in Business Management and Entrepreneurship can be submitted from 1 August to 28 September 2012. The studies will commence in January 2013.

www.samk.fi/BME

The Cross-cultural Development Course is divided into three different topics according to students’ fields of study:
* The Health Care and Social Services Case: Cross-cultural view for analyzing the current social and health care services and for developing the future services
* The Business Case: All Business is international
* The Technology Case: Path to All IP - Evolution of fixed and mobile broadband networks

More than 1,000 new students commenced their studies

More than 1,000 new students commenced their studies at SAMK

More than 1,000 new students commenced their studies at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) this autumn. Of these students, approximately 300 study in the Faculty of Business and Culture, 300 In the Faculty of Social Services and Health Care and more than 500 in the Faculty of Technology and Maritime Management. The academic year 2011–2012 was officially opened on Tuesday, 13 September.

As regards the locations of study, the new students are divided as follows: Pori, approximately 700; Rauma, 350; Huittinen, 40; and Kankaanpää, 30. Furthermore, more than 100 new students have commenced studies leading to a Master’s degree. In total, SAMK has approximately 6,500 students.

Portrait 2011: Applicants appreciate geographical location and flexibility

SAMK annually analyses the applicants' background information and their grounds for choosing the place of study. According to the latest report, applicants appreciate geographical location and flexibility the most.

The majority of the applicants for youth education leading to a Bachelor’s degree (66%) were female, and 63% had completed the matriculation examination. Most applicants, 68%, came from the Satakunta region, followed by Southwest Finland, Southern Ostrobothnia, the Tampere region and the Uusimaa region. Studying at a university of applied sciences is regarded as practical. The geographical location remains the most important ground for applying to SAMK. It is followed by the versatile educational options and the quality of instruction.

The majority of the applicants for adult education leading to a Bachelor’s degree (76%) were female. More than half of the applicants still came from the Satakunta region, but, as a whole, their proportion had slightly decreased, and the proportion of applicants from the Tampere region and Southwest Finland increased. The majority of the applicants had completed a vocational qualification. Only 7% of the applicants were unemployed, the rest being employees or entrepreneurs. For the first time, the flexibility of the studies (28%) now outweighed the geographical location (21%) as the most important criterion for applying.

The majority of the applicants for Master-level degree programmes were female (65%), most of them holding a Bachelor’s degree from a university of applied sciences and from the Satakunta region (77%). The applicants’ most significant images implied that a degree deepens competence and helps to advance in a career.

The geographical location (47%) and the flexibility of the studies (13%) were the most important criteria for applying.

BME student receives a Zonta scholarship

BME student Marika Laaksonen receives a scholarship from Zonta International District 20 (Finland & Estonia)

In May 2011, a Zonta International Jane M. Klausman Women in Business scholarship of 1,000 euro was granted to Marika Laaksonen, who studies in the Master-level degree programme in Business Management and Entrepreneurship (BME) at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. Other candidates were from the Aalto University, the University of Oulu, the Turku School of Economics, the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and the Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences.

The scholarship committee stated that, in addition to her excellent grades, Laaksonen had submitted a mature application and demonstrated the willingness to make progress in a field that is still not yet well-known in Europe, involving strategic management and personnel training. Her ambition is also proven by the fact that, with her long work experience, she has decided to pursue further studies up to a doctorate.

“This distinction was completely unexpected, and I do feel very privileged. I am proud of being able to represent SAMK in such a fine competition,” Marika Laaksonen said upon hearing about the scholarship granted to her.

Marika Laaksonen is still competing for an international scholarship of 5,000 euro, with which she could pursue studies in the United States.

Apply for the Master's programme in business until 30 Sept

SAMK provides tools to reach the top in the business world

Application procedure for the English-language Master’s programme in business administration starts now

The Faculty of Business and Culture in Rauma offers an interesting English-language Master’s degree at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. The degree programme in Business Management and Entrepreneurship (BME) develops the students’ competence in the changing domestic and international business environments.

The Master-level degree programme in Business Management and Entrepreneurship, which leads to the degree Master of Business Administration, educates students for strategic management and business development in small and medium-sized enterprises, focusing particularly on their international operations. There is a great demand for strategic thinking, new business concepts, networking and management skills in the global operational environment. Cooperation with partner institutions in Europe, Asia and the USA adds to the international nature of the programme.

Students can choose the pace of study according to their own personal situation from three options: Standard flow, Fast track and Slow motion. The extent of the degree programme is 90 ECTS credits, and, depending on the pace of study, a student can complete the degree quickly or within a few years. The degree programme, of which 90 per cent consists of online studies, can easily be completed in addition to a regular job in Finland or abroad.

Applications for the degree programme in Business Management and Entrepreneurship can be submitted from 1 June to 30 September 2011. The studies will commence in February 2012.

Further information:
SAMK and Changzhou University Intensify Cooperation

SAMK and Changzhou University Intensify Cooperation

Satakunta University of Applied Sciences and Changzhou University (CZU) intensify their cooperation in the field of research, development and innovations. The second joint research seminar was held in Pori on May 16-17, following the first seminar arranged in Changzhou in 2010.

Changzhou City is located in Jiangsu, Satakunta’s twin province, about 170 km from Shanghai. Changzhou is strategically interesting to Satakunta as the region has many projects dealing with renewable energy sources and drinking water. The City of Shanghai with its population of 20 million inhabitants is a remarkable centre of international business activities; for instance half of the Finnish companies based in China are located there. Shanghai is also known for its World Expo in 2010.
Changzhou University is one of our most important international partners, says Matti Lähdeniemi, SAMK’s Dean. We have student and teacher exchange but would like to expand our cooperation into the field of research. Currently we have at SAMK one professor from Changzhou University as exchange.

According to Lähdeniemi, SAMK is especially interested in cooperation within energy, wellbeing at work, entrepreneurship, environment and clean water. CZU is keen to learn more about e.g. SAMK’s cooperation with local companies.

Business Week in Progress at SAMK

Business Week in Progress at SAMK

The ongoing Business Week (March 14-18) has gathered about 60 students from Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Latvia and Finland to Pori campus. The theme for this meeting is risk management, with Luvata as a case study. The purpose of Business Week is that the students solve issues relating to risk management in multinational teams.

“We have gained very good experience in corresponding events arranged by foreign universities. This time we wanted to offer this event here in Finland to our international network universities. This is also an excellent chance for us to show our own local knowhow”, says Marja-Liisa Jullenmaa, Senior Lecturer of SAMK.

During Business Week the arranging university independently decides the theme for the week. The key thing for each week is to join the students into multinational and multicultural teams which together solve business-related issues. During this spring Business Week events will be arranged also in the Czech Republic and Germany.

SAMMAKKO Engages in Development Cooperation in Zambia

SAMMAKKO Engages in Development Cooperation in Zambia

SAMK’s student union SAMMAKKO has entered into development cooperation with TUO, student union of Turku University of Applied Sciences. The development project is called Green Village (Vihreä kylä) and it was originally started in 2008. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has now extended its funding for this project for three more years (2011-2013).

Green Village is a cooperation project with Green Living Movement (GLM), an non-governmental organisation (NGO) functioning in Zambia. The project aims at supporting the living in some Zambian rural villages, contributing to sustainable farming and using of natural resources as well as encouraging local people in improving their living conditions. Through this project, students can also get trainee placements in both Zambia and Finland.

The development project can be observed in various ways at SAMK. Photo exhibition by Terhi Hytönen is on display in Pori 2.3.-15.3. and in Rauma 16.3.-31.3. The kick-off event will be held in Pori on March 2 starting at noon, with presentations of the project and photo exhibition and latest news from the Zambian villages. Fresh fair-trade coffee and drum music spice the event. Green Village clubs are part of raising funds for the project. During 2011, several club evenings will be arranged in Pori, Rauma and Huittinen. The entrance fees will be directed straight to the project account. The traditional SAMMAKKO anniversary will host an auction and at the end of the year a Green Village gala evening will be arranged.

“Unless you enter the den, you can not get the cubs. Go into the community, live humbly with the people, plan with them, start with what they know and build on what they have.” Guiding principle of GLM by Dr James Yen

This was revealed in the seminar for Finnish universities in the Shanghai world exhibition. Shanghai Expo’s event for universities, ”Sharing Inspiration”, took place on October 25th - 26th and was organized by the centre for international mobility, CIMO, together with Finnish universities.

The interest of Chinese universities is drawn in by Finland’s good results in the Pisa student assessment programme and the sharing of innovations between Finnish universities. On the other hand, China is a very important partner for Finland at the moment, because it is a driving force in the global economy.

– The initiative to further co-operation between Satakunta and the Chinese city of Changzhou came from corporations, says D.Sc. (Econ.) Anne Vihakara from Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. She delivered a key introduction in a seminar on her research Bear Meets Dragon. In her research, she examines the development of the co-operation between the bear province of Satakunta and the dragon city of Changzhou.

– In less than four years, the co-operation has led to a co-operation agreement between Satakunta / Pori and Changzhou, corporate co-operation co-ordinated by Posek and close co-operation between universities. Over 30 student exchanges and a number of teacher and personnel visits have taken place between Satakunta University of Applied Sciences and Changzhou University.

In the seminar, the vice president of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, Matti Lähdeniemi, delivered an introductory speech concerning the development of know-how intensive entrepreneurship. The Enterprise Accelerator of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences has raised interest in Europe and now also in China – how to activate students to start businesses of their own during their studying years?

There are three introductions from Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. Director of Education Sirpa Sandelin speaks of the English degree programme in environmental technology and especially on developing lasting energy technologies. Satakunta University of Applied Sciences will negotiate on developing this kind of co-operation with the administration of Changzhou University.

– China has become one of Finland’s most important partners in university-level education. A majority of foreign students coming to Finland comes from China, 17 per cent of all foreign university students, says CIMO’s China co-ordinator Juha Tähkämaa. China has become the most popular target country of student exchanges in Europe. In 2009 it was the ninth most popular exchange country in Finland.

Approximately 20 Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences, CIMO and its Chinese counterpart CEAIE, Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation; and a number of Chinese universities and other partners of Finnish universities took part in the Sharing Inspiration event on October 25th - 28th, 2010.

Contact information: Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, Head of International Relations Jari Heiniluoma, , tel. +358 (0) 44 710 3013.

The 100th Bachelor of Media and Communications Studies

The 100th Bachelor of Media and Communications Studies

Mr Tuomas Laasanen, who completed his bachelor’s degree on Friday 23 April, has the honour of being the 100th Bachelor of Media and Communications Studies to be graduated from Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. Mr Laasanen has accumulated 240 ECTS credits in the bachelor’s degree programme of Media and Ccommunications studies in Pori. Mr Laasanen, originally from Vaasa, decided to study the field because movies, television and culture were an interesting part of his life after graduating from secondary school. In his studies he has focused on moving pictures and editing.

Mr Henry Merimaa, degree programme coordinator since 2007, considers the 100th bachelor a fine milestone, even though the number in itself holds no greater meaning.

– Electrical media, especially the Internet, are a topical subject nowadays in education. Many changes have been made to the content of the studies in order to meet the needs of working life.

A graduation was held on 23 April at 1:00 PM in the Faculty of Business and Culture Pori.

Director of Education, Ms Marja-Leena Blomroos hands over Tuomas Laasanen’s degree certificate.

New additions to adult studies at Huittinen

The traditions in adult education at Faculty of Business and Culture Huittinen run deep. Those traditions, paired with the exploitation of new technology and new teaching methods, create solid knowhow in which to invest in the future.

In the autumn of 2009, a task force set about mapping out future training needs. This research gave rise to the launching of study programmes in finance and in public administration, for spring applications. BBA degree program, specialized in law continues as the third “product”.

-->

Performance art in Fine arts

Performance Art is a brand-new part of a degree programme in Fine Arts at SAMK. Fine Arts Kankaanpää will kick-off these specialized studies in autumn 2010. The students will graduate to become professional artists after four years of multifaceted studies.

Performance art is one part of the studies including the basics of sculpture, painting and graphic arts. Students will concentrate on performing art skills, such as dramaturgic artistry, dance and body expression. A becoming artist is able to make good use of media like web, graphic design and multimedia.

The best of Finnish professionals of Performance art are teaching – or more like coaching – these versatile skills by interactive discoursing and supporting individual and personal learning processes.

Read more about the Performance art

Student survey every 2 years

Student survey every 2 years

The SAMK Student Survey focuses on what the students pursuing studies leading to a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at SAMK think of matters related to their studies. The survey aimed to find out how the learning environment supports motivation and commitment to studying, what the students think of teaching and learning, how the students rate their well-being and how committed they are to studying and to SAMK.

This is a follow-up to SAMK’s earlier student surveys, of which the preceding one was conducted in 2008. The survey is based on the school effectiveness theory. The survey data is going to be compiled by an on-line survey in January 2010. The target group are the degree students, and he survey shall be sent to the entire target group. The survey consisted of statements and open questions.

In 2008 replies were given by 1,265 students, i.e. 25% of all students enrolled for attendance. Now the aim is higher.

Most of the students in the Bachelor-level degree programmes were fairly satisfied, and the students in the Master-level degree programmes were very satisfied. A clear majority of the students in the Bachelor-level degree programmes felt that they are helped and supported by the fellow students when necessary, the teachers look at them and treat them as grown-up persons and the students are allowed to assume responsibility for their studies.

The students in the Bachelor-level degree programmes indicated matters that clearly need to be improved, such as their dissatisfaction with the amount of feedback from the teachers and the time allowed for discussions with the teachers. Communication on matters related to studies was also considered insufficient. The students in the English-language degree programmes basically gave very similar replies but were more satisfied with the time allowed for discussions between the teachers and the students.

The report on the survey shall be written during spring 2010.

Corporatisation of SAMK is moving ahead

Corporatisation of SAMK is moving ahead

In the spring of 2009, the City Board of Pori commenced a survey concerning the management of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) on the basis of the report prepared by Markku Linna on the development of higher education institutions in the Satakunta region. It is intended that SAMK should be managed by a limited-liability company mainly owned by the municipalities of the region and the parent universities of the Pori University Consortium. Regional industry and commerce will also have an opportunity to acquire share ownership in the company.

The Survey Management Group has prepared proposals for the shareholders’ agreement and the Articles of Association of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences Ltd. The company's operations are scheduled to start in November 2010. The responsibility for the organisation of instruction, now held by the City of Pori, would be transferred to the company at the beginning of 2012, if it has by then obtained an appropriate operating licence to manage the university of applied sciences. The preparations are based on the assumption that the company is a daughter company of the Pori Municipal Group.

Of the 26 universities of applied sciences operating in Finland, six were municipal, seven owned by municipal federations, nine limited-liability companies and four foundation-based or equivalent when the survey work commenced. In other words, a limited-liability company is the dominant ownership model at the universities of applied sciences, and its use seems to steadily increase.

Corporatisation will strengthen the autonomy of the university of applied sciences and renders it a clearly independent responsibility for its operations, finances and performance. The change is in line with the principles followed in the development of the nationwide higher education network and also improves the opportunities for cooperation with industry and commerce. Management solutions of this kind have been recommended in international evaluations of universities of applied sciences.

The inclusion of the universities in the managing ownership of SAMK will solidify the academic community of the Satakunta region and bring further opportunities for longer-term planning. The participation of the universities will also provide an opportunity for the examination of all the available higher education options by a single administrative body from the viewpoint of the regional needs.

The Survey Management Group suggests that the below-mentioned corporations should make a decision-in-principle on the share ownership in the planned Satakunta University of Applied Sciences Ltd on the basis of the prepared model for the shareholders’ agreement and the Articles of Association.

Locations where education leading to a degree currently takes place:
Cities of Pori, Rauma, Kankaanpää and Huittinen,

Parent universities of the Pori University Consortium:
Aalto University, Tampere University of Technology, University of Tampere and University of Turku

Representatives of industry and commerce:
Rauma Chamber of Commerce, Satakunta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise Association of the Satakunta Region

Furthermore:
Other municipalities of the Satakunta region, cities of Laitila and Uusikaupunki and municipality of Pyhäranta

Decision is requested by 31 March 2010.

Further information is obtainable from Aino-Maija Luukkonen, Mayor (tel. 044 701 1010), Seppo Laakkonen, Director of Education (044 701 2431) and Esa Lunnevuori, Business Controller (044 701 1399).

Workstations were virtualized

Less expenses and more efficiency with virtualization

About one hundred workstations were virtualized at the Faculty of Business and Culture Pori in autumn 2009. Virtualization means that a workstation composed of an operating system and applications is located on a server from which it is possible to simulate virtual workstations to classroom devices. SAMK is among the first institutions in Finland to adopt this new virtual technology.

The new system greatly facilitates the work and services of IT people. New software is installed only on the server from which it is simulated to all workstations. In the future this system can offer such endless possibilities we cannot even imagine at the moment. Remote access available to SAMK’s students and personnel from home or on the road can be one of potential future uses worth investigating and utilizing.

Animal Class competing for European Championship

Animal Class competing for European Championship

Harri Ketamo, Senior Lecturer of Social Media at SAMK, and Marko Suominen, Researcher at the Tampere University of Technology, have together created an innovative game series called Animal Class. Now the newest game of this series, named European Map, has been nominated as one of the finalists for Innovative Games Award to be held in Frankfurt, Germany. European Innovative Games Awards are presented in three classes, i.e. Technology, Design and Methods, with Animal Class belonging to the last one.

In the Animal Class game series each player gets his or her own virtual pet who wants to learn mathematics, biology, languages and music. The task of the player is to teach the pet and the pet will learn, depending on the skills of the player, i.e. also wrong. The innovative character of the game becomes evident in the artificial intelligence of Animals which simulates the learning process in compliance with the theories of neuropsychology and cognitive psychology. This game is meant for children aged 10-15 years. The preceding series of Animal Class have won for instance the Nordic Serious Games Award in 2008.

More information:
Finland’s first solar-powered swimming pool complex for Pori

Finland’s first solar-powered swimming pool complex for Pori

The first public swimming pool in Finland to utilise solar power gives an extra boost to the forward-looking energy region of Satakunta

In the 450th Jubilee meeting of Pori City Council on 8.3.2008, the decision was taken to build a new swimming pool complex in Pori. The complex will be located on Kuninkaanhaka Square between Itsenäisyydenkatu and Presidentinpuistokatu streets. Building work will get underway in November of this year. The inauguration of the pool complex is scheduled for the “Pori Day” of September 2011.

Unique solar energy solution for Finland

The solar energy solutions designed for Pori’s new pool complex are unique in the whole of Finland. The project embraces the latest technology, the development of renewable forms of energy, research and innovations, plus training for future specialists in the field.

The energy solution for the swimming pool complex optimises the joint use of many systems. Special attention has been paid in the design to energy saving and recovery at the pool complex, and to the way in which the energy is produced. As a brand-new energy solution for public facilities, the design includes solar-powered panels to produce electricity for the complex and solar collectors to heat the pool water. Even though this solution only replaces a part of the complex’s requirements for district heat and electric power, nevertheless the Pori model represents a new approach by Finnish cities to stopping climate change.

With this project, Pori will become a trailblazer, since this solar solution will be the country’s first solar energy investment in a swimming pool complex, and as such constitutes a major environmental action. During the summertime, when the indoor swimming pool is normally closed, the basic functions of the complex will be maintained by solar power. When the swimming pool complex is open, solar energy will be used as a complementary energy system for heating the pool water and electricity consumption.

Energy-stingy swimming pool

Solar heat collectors will generate 120 000 kWh of energy for the complex, corresponding to the annual heating costs of six average detached houses and covering 5 % of the annual heat requirements of the swimming pool complex. The solar panels will produce approximately 45 000 kWh or 3 % of the electricity consumed by the building. In any case, the swimming pool complex is designed to be “energy-stingy” and includes heat recovery from exhaust air and shower water, and other energy-saving solutions.

Special know-how of solar energy region also recognised internationally

Luvata, the leading international metals and solutions supplier for the renewable energy and power generation industries, and their partner network, provided the design expertise for the project. The swimming pool complex will have a total of 560 m2 of solar panels and collectors on its roof hidden from view. Additionally, an area of 80 m2 of solar energy collectors will be integrated in the cladding copper material on the south-facing façade. This is the first pilot site in the world that incorporates the fully-integrated solar energy system by Luvata.

The Satakunta University of Applied Sciences SAMK and local business partners have a key role to play as far as the implementation of the solar energy region is concerned. The City of Pori has made an important start in this by selecting solar power as one of the sources of energy for the swimming pool complex. At the same time it is supporting the growth of research, training and expertise in the energy form of the future in Satakunta. In autumn 2010, the Environmental Engineering degree programme starting at SAMK will meet the demand for specialists in renewable energy directly.

The design expertise for the project was provided by the international solar power player Luvata and their partner network. Special focus was also placed on the outward appearance of the complex. The swimming pool complex will have a total of 560 m2 of solar panels and collectors on its roof behind a designed screen. Additionally, an area of 80 m2 of solar energy collectors will be integrated in the cladding copper material on the south-facing façade. This is the first pilot site of this architectural system in the world.

Solar energy to create jobs in Satakunta

The solar energy systems designed for the swimming pool complex will enable long-term monitoring. The mapping out of opportunities for the solar energy business done in spring in Satakunta indicated that local firms and university research functions possess the expertise and capacity to carry out research and development in this field.

The project will facilitate the creation of new jobs in the solar energy business in the region. Experts on the field will be employed directly in industry, but new employment will also be generated via new technical products and services. Currently, the solar energy business employs almost 100 people in the Pori district.

Partners

The solar energy project involves the City of Pori, Satakunta University of Applied Sciences and Luvata. The project will go ahead as soon as the energy investment subsidy from the Finnish State is confirmed.

Cost estimate and other facts

The cost estimate for the swimming pool complex as of November 2007 stood at 15.8 million Euros. With building costs expected to rise, the probable construction cost now stands at approximately 17.5 million Euros. The Pori swimming pool complex has been granted the maximum amount of state aid, i.e. 750 000 euro of National Lottery money.

The swimming pools will be built on one level. The second floor will be reserved for technical and administrative purposes. The basement will be completely open and there will be an access ramp.

Estimated number of visitors per year, approx. 380 000.

For further information, please contact:

City of Pori
One of the most essential partners in the project is the Swedish MITTUNIVERSITETET (Mid Sweden University), which is the youngest university in Sweden. MITTUNIVERSITETET has faculties in Sundsvall, Härnösand and Östersund. Academic lecturer Lisbeth Kristiansen, international relations coordinator Barbro Dahlbäck and academic lecturer Eija Viitasara pay a visit to Finland from Sundsvall.

In the beginning of April, Director of Education Tuula Rouhiainen-Valo and R&D planner Ritva Annala participated in a UniPlatform conference in Sundsvall. One of the goals of the counter-visit from Sweden is to familiarize the guests with the Social Services and Health Care education, research and development in SAMK. The purpose of the visit is also to discuss the possibilities to collaborate in terms of the Master’s Degree Programmes. Social services and Health Care students have become increasingly interested in student exchange to the Nordic countries and especially to Sweden. The visit from the Swedish university is also an excellent opportunity to discuss the possibilities of student and staff exchange in the future.

The second Summer School started

The second international summer school started

Satakunta University of Applied Sciences and Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences are arranging for the second time the International Summer School in 18 May – 12 June 2009. Summer School gathers students all the way from the Unites States, Europe and also from Finland to spend two weeks in Pori and two weeks in Rovaniemi. During one month the students are learning new information from their respective fields and getting to know a new culture.

The idea of the Summer School developed originally from the need to improve the co-operation with the American universities. In Finland there are lot of students willing to go for an exchange in USA but not the other way around. Now Pori and Rovaniemi are trying to temp the Americans with Summer School which lasts a shorter period of time.

- "Last year we had about 40 participants and this year over 50. We have also three American teachers coming and they are taking part in the realization of Summer School", tells Summer School coordinator Marina Wikman happily.

Summer School consists of three different cases: business, technology and health care and social services. The case is chosen depending on students own studies. In addition to this there are additional courses like Russia as business and co-operation environment, which includes an excursion to St. Petersburg.

- "The wishes of the students have been taken in to notion when constructing the program. We also wanted that all the faculties of SAMK would be represented", Wikman explains.

The first two weeks of Summer School are carried through at SAMK in Pori and the other two at RAMK in Rovaniemi. This co-operation of two universities of applied sciences gives the summer school students a more profound picture of Finland and also makes the contents of the studies more versatile.

In addition to studies there are lot of extra curriculum activities from steering the SAMK ship simulator to trekking weekend in Lapland. In Pori the students also get to try surfing at the Yyteri Beach.

A visit from Germany highlights the BME’s study year

A visit from Germany highlights the BME’s study year

A group of students from Germany arrives in Rauma to exchange their experiences with SAMK’s Master’s degree students in Business Management and Entrepreneurship. The weeklong visit will consist of studying personnel administration, leadership and multicultural leadership as well as familiarizing with the local enterprises and the region.

The students of the new Business Management and Entrepreneurship master degree programme have studied since last autumn and now have the chance to get to know their German colleagues. One of the main goals of the week is sharing experiences among the two postgraduate groups. The BME students study along with their work and therefore sharing experiences about studying and working life is extremely important.

The postgraduate business students of the German Fachhochshule Ludwigshafen visit Rauma from the 26th of April to the 3rd of May. The group of 13 people - students and personnel - will spend the First of May week studying in Rauma. The busy schedule for the week includes lectures from Finnish and German lecturers, visits to companies and a reception of the City of Rauma as well as getting to know the city and the area.

The German Fachhochschule Ludwigshafen and SAMK are strategic partners, and have cooperated for several years. However, the cooperation with the master’s degrees is unique so far. International cooperation between master’s degrees is difficult to arrange, because of the part-time nature of the studies. Short study modules are, however, easier to arrange. Although the schedule is tight, not only is there time for exchange experiences but also to study efficiently and familiarize with a strange city. In a master’s degree programme like the BME, cooperation with foreign partners and internationally operating companies is vital. The BME students are, in fact, planning a study trip abroad – a counter visit to Germany would be an excellent opportunity to deepen cooperation.

The application period for the master’s degrees which start in the autumn is going on until the 30th of April. Further information about BME and other applicable programmes is available at www.samk.fi/master.

Number of applicants is increasing

Number of applicants is increasing

Almost 5700 applications to SAMK

The application period for the achelor's degree programmes in Finnish has ended. The number of applicants applying to SAMK is rising: SAMK received almost 5700 applications, of which over 1800 were from students who marked SAMK as their forst choice. The total intake for the bachelor’s degree programmes is 923.

The amount of primary applicants rose over 20 percent from last year and the amount of all applicants increased nearly 15 percent. Technology and Maritime Management had the biggest enhancement with over a 26 percent increase from last year. The increase results from the growing interest in Mechanical and Production Engineering and Electrical Engineering. The advancement can be seen in SAMK’s all other programmes, too. Business and Culture had an increase of over 11 percent and 23 percent in Social Services and Health Care.

- The number of applications rose also on a nationwide scale. All in all, there were 64 600 applicants in Finland and a 13 percent increase from last year, states Janne Santala, Head of Student Administration in Satakunta University of Applied Sciences.

Physiotherapy still interests the most

The Degree Programme in Physiotherapy was the most popular of the degree programmes offered by SAMK: there was over ten primary applicants per every starting place. Physiotherapy has been remarkably appealing for years. Next in line were Social Services and Business Administration in Pori.

The invitations for the entrance examinations will be sent during week 22. The entrance examinations will take place in the beginning of June. The results will be announced to the applicants in July at the earliest.

Application periods for the Degree Programmes of Adult Education and the Master's Degree Programmes are presently going on and end by 30 April 2009. SAMK also has an application period for Professional Specialisation Studies from the 14 April to 15 May.

More information: Head of Student Administration Janne Santala, or 044 710 3012

SAMK passed the audit

Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) has passed the audit of quality assurance system

“This is an excellent springboard for further development of both SAMK and of higher education institutions in Satakunta as a whole”, says Päivi Jaatinen, Development Director of SAMK.

The Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council (FINHEEC) has evaluated the quality assurance system of SAMK and SAMK has passed the QA audit. In a quality assurance audit it is evaluated how the QA system supports the leadership and the qualitative development of education, research and social interaction of the institution.

The QA activities are implemented as a normal part of strategy and practical work at SAMK. The activities are also closely linked with enterprise resource planning of the institution.

“The level of our QA system was ranked to belong to the second best group in terms of a four-point scale. This is an excellent springboard for further development of both SAMK and of higher education institutions in Satakunta as a whole”, says Päivi Jaatinen, Development Director.

SAMK’s quality assurance system has been steadily developed in order to make it a tool which guides the work and personal goals of each individual. Consequently, it enables each person to understand his or her own responsibility and impact on reaching the objectives of the whole SAMK.

“Our aim is to incorporate quality assurance closely into daily work. This begins already with the orientation programme as soon as a new employee is recruited to SAMK”, states Jaatinen.

SAMK’s strong input into QA work has brought about visible results along the years. According to the evaluation made by the Ministry of Education, SAMK is among the top five universities of applied sciences in Finland, when comparing the quality of education. The Ministry of Education has given SAMK two quality unit prizes for education and SAMK has also been selected to be a top unit for its activities in regional development.

Students have good possibilities to influence

In the audit report FINHEEC gives SAMK acknowledgement for the fact that a majority of the staff is committed to quality assurance and understands its importance. The QA system also guarantees the students good possibilities to participate and influence, which has been well benefited among the students. In its audit feedback FINHEEC also states that SAMK is well integrated into the surrounding society through its close interaction with the working life. Through advisory boards it is possible for the representatives of the working life to take active part in directing SAMK’s future activities.

“FINHEEC gave SAMK good feedback on our regular follow-up studies addressed to graduated students and employers, study feedback gathered from the students and our partnership contracts with companies”, says Päivi Jaatinen.

In its report, FINHEEC also makes some development recommendations. SAMK should clarify its Balanced Scorecard and increase the number of internal audits. It would also be vital for SAMK to better find out what kind of data produced by the QA system would be required by external stakeholders. In order to commit the whole SAMK staff into the QA system FINHEEC also recommends SAMK to further develop its QA system and enhance dialogue between the management and staff.

New Portal for Higher Education in Satakunta

The cooperation of higher education institutions in Satakunta becomes closer also on the web. The common webportal satakorkea.fi now is open for visitors.

The portal targets mainly to applicants – future students - and companies and other organisations interested in the various services and cooperation opportunities the HE institutions offer. However, e.g. the language course search serves also students already studying in Satakunta.

At this point the webportal is written in Finnish. An introductory text in English opens by clicking a flag icon on the main page. The portal will be developed according to feedback.

The satakorkea.fi portal is a part of stronger cooperation between the HE institutions in Satakunta:

Diaconia University of Applied Sciences

University Corsortium Pori- Satakunta University of Applied Sciences

Department of Teacher Education in Rauma, University of Turku

educational and research institutions belonging to HE institutions
